Firm Profile

Meehanlaw, LLC has been a constant and evolving law firm cemented in Fairfield County, Connecticut for nearly 60 years.  Founded in 1961, by Richard T. Meehan, Sr. (1923 – 2002), an orphan born and raised in the industrial city of Bridgeport, Connecticut.  Richard first walked the mean streets of Bridgeport, as police officer before he became a lawyer.  He went on to be the first police officer in the state of Connecticut to become an attorney and Judge of the Superior Court.  Richard T. Meehan, Sr. was a dean of the criminal defense bar.  He was a master trial lawyer.  His street fighter upbringing was counterbalanced with an honorable and compassionate approach to the practice of law.  His cases, trial verdicts and appellate decisions are still looked upon as some of the greatest work by any Connecticut criminal defense lawyer in the history of Connecticut jurisprudence.  To this day many senior members of the bar, and judiciary, often remark about the great man and lawyer, Richard T. Meehan, Sr. was.

In 1974 Richard T. Meehan, Jr. partnered with his father to form Meehan & Meehan.  Richard T. Meehan, Jr. brought a different approach to the firm following his clerkship for  Justice Herbert MacDonald of the Connecticut Supreme Court.  Capitalizing on the tradition of criminal defense work, Richard became an accomplished criminal defense trial lawyer.  However, he did not stop there and evolved the firm into a boutique civil and criminal litigation firm.  Since the 1980’s the firm has been one of Connecticut’s premier criminal and civil boutique litigation firms  Richard T. Meehan, Jr. has represented thousands of clients over the past 45 years in high profile criminal defense cases as well as personal injury, malpractice (medical, dental, legal), which have resulted in numerous acquittals, millions of dollars worth of settlements, verdicts and arbitration awards.  Richard’s work has been the subject of local and national media reports.  Richard’s work has been featured on every major television network.  One of Richard’s most publicized cases was his representation of Bridgeport’s mayor, Joseph Ganim in what is known as Connecticut’s largest federal municipal corruption case. Now, a senior member of the bar, Richard has replaced his father as an honored and trusted lawyer.  Richard T. Meehan, Jr. has been  recognized as one of Connecticut’s Top 50 lawyers by Super Lawyers[1].  He has been named to Connecticut Super Lawyers and New England Super Lawyers, since 2006.
