Meehan Meehan & Gavin will handle any type of felony or misdemeanor. The terms felony and misdemeanor are used to describe the seriousness of crime. Under Connecticut law a felony is an offense for which a person may be sentenced to a term of imprisonment in excess of one year. Under Connecticut law a misdemeanor is an offense for which a person may be sentenced to a term of imprisonment of not more than one year. Within each type of crime (i.e. felony and misdemeanor) Connecticut separates the severity of the crime by way of classification. As for the felonies Connecticut separates felonies into six classifications, beginning with the most serious Capital felonies (i.e. murder), progressing to Class A through D felonies and unclassified felonies. Misdemeanors follow suit with four classifications of crimes beginning with the most serious Class A misdemeanors through unclassified misdemeanors. The following is a breakdown of the penalties imposed by law for each classification of crime. Please be aware that certain crimes carry mandatory jail sentences which are not reflected in this diagram. This diagram is merely meant to illustrate the breakdown in crime classification and corresponding penalties. Always check the specific statute to determine whether or not it carries with it mandatory minimum penalties that go beyond these general provisions.
